St. Bernard, Southern Leyte Mudslide UPDATE

Its been five days since the tragedy in Southern Leyte happened. Let me recap first.

~RECAP~
St. Bernard experienced a week long of rainfall til 10:45AM of February 17. An earthquake with 2.00+ magnitude occurred...afterwards, a massive landslide/mudslide buried three barangays of St. Bernard particularly, Guinsaugon. Thousands of people and properties in a 50-hectare land buried beneath for about 30-40 meters. The progressive Guinsaugon turned into a muddy and lifeless land in just a blink of an eye.

~UPDATES~
The updates below where taken from  ABS-CBN TV Patrol World (wherein Karen Davilla and company report live from St. Bernard) and statistics where taken this morning from Magandang Umaga Bayan, morning news of ABS-CBN.

Statistics as of February 22, 2006 7AM
104 died
1200 missing
19 wounded

The "Sign of Life Movement" , a rescue operation hoping there are still survivor particularly in the elementary school is still onging. However, until now... they havent retrieved any survivors. Yesterday, volunteered Tawainese used a seismic sensor to detect if there are still signs of survivors. This machine can detect sounds and classify it even it is 100 meters underground. The same survey did by UP Diliman's geologists using a ground penetrating radar. The two machines havent found any sound of life. They say, chances of survivor is impossible but they still pursue with the rescue/retrieval operations. The rescue / retrieval operation is consist of US Marines, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), experts from Taiwan, Malaysia and Spain, miners from Benguet (the same people who were able to retrieved 4 survivors from the Ripador Bldg., Real, Quezon tragedy last 2004), Philippine Red Cross and concern citizens.

~COPING and MY THOUGHT~
Survivors are now coping from the said tragedy. A lot of NGOs are helping the victims through relief distribution and counseling. US Marines held a stress debriefing yesterday with children survivors. A Fil-Am US Marine volunteered soldier appealed last night to all Filipinos abroad to extend a helping hand thru donations.

MY THOUGHT --->   Whats happening in our country is indeed heart-breaking. The stampede and mudslide. I wonder why a lot of people are dying these past days... even abroad. Remember the ship that sank in Red Sea that kill around 1000+ passengers? The collapsed building in Poland due to heavy snow fall? Grabe noh? Nagbabawas ata. God only knows why. There was one OFW from London who went home after watching the news only to find out that 23 of her family and relatives are mssing. If I were her, definitely, I don't know how to continue my life. Starting from scratch alone. Lets help these survivors in any way. If we can't help in kind, I believe a prayer esp. for the departed ones is good enough.

In case there are updates with regards to this tragedy, I'll just post it in the Shared Thoughts (Comments).

Latest updates--> There's no official list of the statistics yet, but the only figure that is certain are the number of survivors (these are not retrieved survivors but survivors right after the mudslide) is 19 wherein the youngest is a 1-yr old boy and the oldest is a 70-yr old grannie. The retrieval operation was cancelled yesterday 'coz experts say there's a possibility of landslide again.
