Baguio City (aka The Summer Capital of the Philippines) is one of the key cities of our country. It is also one of the favorite tourist destination in the archipelago because of its cool temperature (reaches til 4 degree Celsius) and wonderful tourist spots such as Burnham Park, Mines View Park, Camp John Hay, Wright Park and the prestiguous Philippines Military Academy.
The city celebrates its flower festival called Panagbenga (pronounced as pa-nag-beng-ga) every February til March. Panagbenga was conceived on 1995 however, its first parade of floats made of fresh flowers was held on 1997. Panagbenga uses the sunflower as its symbol. It is also similar with the USA's Rose Parade however, Panagbenga is composed of two parades which starts at Upper Session Rd. down to Athletic Bowl. This year's fluvial parade was held last Saturday (February 25) and on the next day, the drum & lyre and street dancing competitions. The street dancing competition showcases the rich culture of the Cordillerias particularly their cultural dance called cañao (pronounced as kan-yaw. The dancers wear their ethnic customes and dance gracefully with the beat of gongs. Below are sample snapshots that you can expect in these parades:

MY THOUGHT --> I considered Baguio City as my second home which is just one and half hour ride via Kennon Rd. from my hometown Pozorrubio. I spent my college life there in Saint Louis University (SLU). In my four years stay in the city, the lowest temperature I felt was 5C...brrrr, that was cold! And of course, I never missed the Panagbenga celebration! Me and my friends or relatives often visit the city and wait for the parade patiently at the Session Rd. (despite the huge crowd) to see these fabulous creations and watch the dancers dance canao with their
flesh-revealing ethnic customes personally. But sometimes there are unavoidable circumstance and we can't go to Baguio, we just watch it in the television broadcasted live. Baguio City became popular since early 2000s with ukay-ukay, stores that sells second-hand goodies such as clothes, bags and shoes. Philippines has a lot of festivals that attract tourists both international and local to be a part of the optimistic and jolly celebration of Filipinos despite the difficulties the country is experiencing nowadays such as economic and political crisis. I believe that tourism makes the Philippines earn revenues and proves the rich heritage of its country men and the true Filipino spirit: tough, hospitable, jolly and a fighter. Oh well, that makes Filipinos one of the happiest people in the world.... I'm one of them!

. Kakaiba ang Baguio daw kasi of its cooler temperatures nga, sana I can visit there someday
. It's pretty there I heard, kaya it's no wonder na such a vacation spot ng mga tourists
. Anyway, major problem ng country natin ang corruption and violence, kaya not too many people would risk their lives going there as like my husband na when he saw some chaos and burning American flags, he was disgusted and disouracge kaagad
. Hay, sometimes our people don't help at all
. Sana naman we'll do better but who knows lang what the future holds. Let's hope for the best lang
.
Hi ANA! Thanks for coming and checking out the pics in my entry here. I agree with you, ang daming foreigners na nadidiscourage to visit our country becoz of the disgusting act of some Filpinos which hurt foreigners' feelings. Honestly, I'm tired of 'em. Yan din ang rason kung bakit ang daming Pilipinong gustong mag-abroad... nakakalungkot lng isipin na bka dumating ang araw na lahat na supposed-to-be asset ng bansa ay asset na ng ibang bansa.
Hi Salva, nice pics of the festival. I have nice memories in Baguio, we always go there during summer vacations. I miss the Ube jam from the Good Shepherd sisters. Taga saan ka?
Hi BABETTE! I'm glad u appreciated these pics... but u know what? U will appreciate those floats and cañao dance and ethnic customes more if you will watch them in person. The only problem is the huge crowd. Yea, the Ube Jam from Good Shepherd is the best, the same thing with with peanut brittle and lengua de gato !
I'm from Pozorrubio, Pangasinan which is just one and a half ride via Kennon Rd. if u will go to Baguio. Two and half naman pag via Marcos Hi-way.
. Trabaho ng trabaho for very little money-wages, hay, paano tayo i-improve nyan. Mga tao na naka upo sa Gov eh sila na mismo ang gumagawa ng kalokohan, the corruption is unbearable sa country natin, kaya ang ibang bansa ay talagang mag look down sa atin dyan. We're staying third world dahil sa walang progress sa pamamalakad. Hay, na shocked ang husband ko seeing the long lines everyday sa U.S. Embassy. Grabe daw, parang hindi tayo maubosan ng tao, ang dami talaga. Violence and lawlesness are what threatens the tourists to go there. Ang dami na ng na biktima, my husband said "he doens't want to be next", nakita nya ang ginawa ng Abu Sayaff-beheaded an American at iba pa
. Talagang scary na.
Hi ANA!Thanks for visiting my journal again and shared your thought. U r right ang hirap na ng pamumuhay ngayon d2. That's the reason why I took caregiver even though I'm college grad na at working. I'm hoping that soon I'll be employed in Canada and be an immigrant... kung d2 lng kasi mamamatay ka sa gutom... the basic commodities are very expensive grabe! I wonder if Philippines will solve the poverty and political crisis... Well, just wait and see.
THIS POST IS IN RESPONSE TO R.Ariola:
Yeah, I heard that there were arguments between organizers but hey! it doesnt matter anymore coz the festival is a success. Russel, I wud like to use the pics to post here if u dont mind. Lastly, I'm glad u dropped by and hope to see u again here soon.
